A problem that is prevalent in the Automotive World is recalls.
When news breaks about a major recall it can be easy to realize that it applies to your vehicle. But, when the recall doesn’t become a national news story it can be difficult to keep drivers up to date about possible issues with their automobile. The current system of informing drivers is flawed, leading to a lack of repairs. While automotive companies issue the recalls it can still be hard to reach consumers. Among other factors, age comes in to play. The older the car is, the more likely it’s been sold from one owner to another. This makes it challenging for vehicle companies to contact the appropriate driver. This issue is problematic on both sides. Drivers have to want to bring their automobile in and car companies have to find better ways of ensuring the information gets to the driver. Since there’s no follow through on whether the repairs were made or not, it’s easy to sweep these things go under the rug.
Recall Repair Process
One way companies have been making strides is by adding recall information to a vehicle’s inspection sheet, making the issues more apparent. Also, the company Revecorp is making the process a little smoother by working to digitize the paper method, making it easier to connect car owners with recall info. This system allows inspectors to easily look up a VIN number and get information about recalls that they can then pass on to drivers.

We get quite a few questions about the auto repair recalls in the News. One of the most popular recalls lately is the airbag recall. With roughly 42,000,000 vehicles involved you may have gotten a notice yourself or have a friend who has received a letter in the mail. Recall work is done through the dealers because of the link to the manufacturers, however we are happy to help you with finding if your car or truck is involved in any of the recalls throughout the automotive world. You can do quite a bit of research on your own with recall checking sites like the Recall VIN checker on safecar.gov. You will need to get the VIN from your vehicle which is usually a 17-digit number and is generally located on the driver’s side dash that you can see through the windshield, and it’s typically on the driver’s side of the car frame when you open the front door.
Of course there are many more types of recalls than just the most popular airbag currently happening. Most every part of the automobile has been subject to some level of a recall over the automotive history. We have always been safety conscious from our daily repairs to the Maryland State Inspections. So it’s no surprise that we stress not to ignore recall notices. Experiences at the dealership will vary with each location and manufacturer. Here is a list of car makers which are affected by the takata airbag recall currently (best practices to check the VIN, but this will give you a starting place):
Acura, Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Daimler Trucks North America (Sterling Bullet), Daimler Vans USA LLC (Sprinter), Dodge, Ram, Ferrari, Fisker, Ford, GMC, Honda, Infiniti, Jaguar, Jeep, Land Rover, Lexus, Lincoln, Mazda, McLaren, Mercedes-Benz, Mercury, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Pontiac, Saab, Saturn, Scion, Subaru, Tesla, Toyota, Volkswagen.
Other helpful sources to check into the validity of recalls in the automotive world is the United States Department of transportation – National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website here’s their page specific to the airbag info. Trends change and experiences differ, we have conversations with decades long trusted customers who are about to go in for a recall. They wonder what to expect since they know several of us have worked in the past at dealerships. We are happy to help in any way possible. We also ask what their experience was like and they differ as time passes. In general, long ago there was a feeling to get the recall done and get the customer out the door as fast as possible, however now we hear more about a sales pitch for all the possible things that can be fixed. That’s probably no surprise to you either. We are interested to hear from you about your recall experience and are willing to help with advice when we can and share the Automotive News all across Maryland.
